When using StumbleUpon on my sites, they did bring in a substantial amount of traffic but something was wrong. There was hardly any opt-in subscirbers to my mailing list which I had put on my site. (I had put in place a tracking mechanism)

That was when I realized the power of targeted traffic….

In fact, I get less traffic BUT more opt-in from EzineArticles.com than my Great StumbleUpon Experiment.

Here’s why…

StumbleUpon generates visitors that are mostly surfers who are curious but not necessarily targeted Traffic.

On the contrary, EzineArticles.com generates better traffic because those who end up on EzineArticles.com are prospects who are genuinely looking for solutions to a problem they are currently facing.

They are called “Solution-Oriented Visitors“!

These are the kind of visitors you will want on your website because they are the ones that are more likely to opt-in to your list and ultimately become your curstomers.

This is what I have discovered. You could try it out for yourself.

The fact that they are reading your articles on EzineArticles.com confirms that they are looking for how-to solutions.

However, the most important part of your article is your resource box. It’s what you write in your resource box that determines if the “Solution-Oriented Visitor” would arrive on your website.

I have seen many articles whose Resource Box does NOTHING to encourage the “Solution-Oriented Visitor” to visit their website and it goes something like…

“For More Information On Losing Man Boobs..visit www.getridmanboobs.com“

Instead it could be written as

“For A Limited Time, AuthorName is giving away a free report on how to get rid of your man boobs in just
under one week. Get your free report worth $27 at www.getridmanboobs.com now”

I bet the visitor would visit your site without even blinking…

I’ve been humbled.

I thought I knew all about affiliate marketing that I fine-tuned over the years, but I was recently jolted to my senses.

Alright, I didn’t do too badly either, as I still managed a consistent 5-figure income from the Internet, mostly on autopilot now.

My online business is in all kinds of niches - mainly affiliate marketing, and mostly in non-Internet Marketing niches.

There’s one important lesson I recently learnt that I’d like to share with you here. And it is just 2 words:

=> RELATIONSHIP BUILDING

Before I touch on that, you probably already know that the fundamentals of building an Internet business are:

1) Find a rabid niche and related affiliate products to promote
2) Build a landing page to capture leads
3) Drive traffic to your lead-capturing page
4) REALLY SPEND TIME to cultivate your leads into a highly responsive list so you can recommend good affiliate products to
5) Repeat with another niche

Here’s an important point that many people missed:

=> Building Relationship With Your Subscribers

This is so fundamental to success that many marketers are simply too lazy or busy to spend time on. Each subscriber can be worth $1-$2 per month from my experience, so I don’t see why anyone should not focus on giving great value to their subscribers. Your subscribers are live people, so treat them as such, and not just another name you can milk money from.

Many times when people buy through your affiliate link, it’s because of the special relationship and trust that you’ve nurtured with your subscribers over time. They buy on the stength of your recommendation. Always seek to over-deliver in giving good and free information First.

Another very important aspect of relationship building that not many marketers are even aware of:

If you promote an affiliate product, have you ever communicated with the product owner? I know most people don’t.

Here are some insider tips and benefits in building that special relationship:

1) First, get a copy of the product. You can either buy it yourself (if you don’t want to feel indebted later), or request an evaluation copy. 8 out of 10 times they will be happy to oblige since this is a win-win.

It would be easier, but not mandatory, if you can show that your website is promoting their product, or if you have already made a few sales. With a copy, you can then assess if it is good enough to recommend to your subscribers, and this can be a starting point to build the relationship.

2) Some product owners have prepared marketing materials for their affiliates, and some are willing to produce if you just tell them what you need. An example is to extract a good chapter from the product to make into a viral report that has your affiliate links sprinkled sparingly in the pages.

You can give the report to your subscribers and encourage them to pass it around (hence the viral effect), or you can use it as an opt-in incentive. If such report is not available, you can offer your service to do it for them.

3) This is the most exciting part of building a relationship with the product owner: you can tap into their traffic sources!

I bet you didn’t know that. Most owners have opt-in subscribers that other affiliates send their traffic to. Most owners also do not have enough unique and quality content to keep up with their subscribers.

This is where you come in: offer to provide unique content for their subscribers, and in return, they send their subscribers to opt-in into your newsletter.

Of course, you can make their product as the primary product to promote, but subsequently you can cross-promote related products to your subscribers over and over (and not forgetting to provide good useful information in between).

As an experiment, I applied what I learned recently, and refocused my marketing activities for one of my niche sites that I somewhat neglected.

In 2 days, my opt-in rate went from 11% to 40%. Resulting sales figures? That site used to make one sale every 2 days on average, but after I tweaked it, it has been one sale a day now. That’s a sales increase of 200%!

Oftentimes the user who is trying to earn a free gift gives up for one reason or another before getting the required number of referrals. In this case the IFW collects some commissions and doesn’t have to send the user anything, so it’s pure profit for them.

That’s how Rachel managed to rake in over 2 grand. I guess she does catch on my entrepreneur bug after all..=)

Well, I’m not sure if it’s something to be proud of but I can look at it from two perspectives…

One, I got smarter! In fact I would attribute it to my current online success from the lessons that I’ve learnt from these mistakes…

Two, I can whine about it, live in regret and spend the rest of my life telling my sob story to everyone that crosses my path…

You see this is the side of my story I’m not particularly proud of but I realized the success that most of you see from gurus really did not come easy.

Many have walked the path I did, committed many blunders…some were even sued by FTC.

But that’s not the point here….

What I’m trying to get at, is these mistakes have taught most of us (entrepreneurs) to be smarter…to start thinking out of the box when making business decisions.

And today I’m going to show you how thinking out of the box can help you get traffic lazily & gain exposure to your website with just one or few forum posts. Yes, you heard it right.

(if it doesn’t intrigue you, why would it be thinking out of the box otherwise?  :=)

Before I tell you about the forum method, I want to set the record straight.

I know some of you would like it to be like “Craig, can you show us step by step how to do it…to the very exact words to say and do.”

I’m sorry I’ll have to disappoint you if you ask to be spoon-fed. 

But if you feel what I’m about to share make good sense, you’ll be able to do it instinctively. That is the spirit about doing online business.

You need to understand that when it comes to marketing, you are dealing with a real human being and not some robot you can feed some sentences and it’ll hand you what you desire.

OK, Why Forum Marketing?  

The context in which your customers get to see your offer is very important.

Eg. If your potential customer is searching on Google, his guard is higher. But if he knows he searching in a forum, he is less guarded because forums creates a sense of community where everyone’s opinions are open for others to criticise.

Visitors in forums are usually there to look for new information as people constantly want to be in the know…

They are also there to seek for opinions (The trust there is enough that they would be open to other people’s suggestions)

Everyone someone wants to have a say and give their own opinions whether they are competent or not.

So how do you get traffic to your web site from forums with just one or a few posts…

You get them to give you their opinion.

Let’s say you’re in a Yoga niche.

You could pose a question like:

“I know some of you may not like Kundalini Yoga but I also know that it helps to awaken your body’s energy…which camp do you belong to? Do you prefer Kundalini Yoga or others?”

You will certainly get a heated debate here automatically and you can recommend the exact Kundalini Yoga DVDs in your forum signature.

You can also post again to comment after other people’s replies for added boost.

With so much content on your post or topic, it’s like creating a long article of content, not created by you but by the forum users.

What this does is that it creates new content that Google will easily indexed (generally forum pages are highly indexed by Google), therefore bringing trafic not only from forum users but also from the search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN…and for a long while.

When visitor traffic arrives, your signature will be exposed to them, so make sure you use a good headline for your signature.

A few proven signature lines are:

(if you’re in a weight loss niche and your post is about a pill called X)

WHAT IS SEO

SEO is search engine optimization - it is actually not that difficult. Short of writing a book about it, I’ll explain in layman terms.

SEO has 3 main factors:

1) On-page optimization

This means the site structure, meta tags (title and description) of each page. Wordpress for example, is a good platform to use, provided it is used with the right SEO plugins.

A MUST-HAVE plugin for SEO purposes is All-in-one SEO Pack. 

2) Off-page optimization

Simply, the incoming links to your website. Not just any link, but related quality links that are not seen by the search engines as manipulative. More about that below.

3) Contents

Continually updated and well themed contents. Which is why Web 2.0 sites (social networking sites like Myspace, Facebook etc) are doing well because the contents are freshly and regularly contributed by users.

I’ll cover more on off-page factor, because it is by far the MOST IMPORTANT of the 3.

Just remember this:

INCOMING LINKS => HIGHER PAGERANK => MORE VISITORS

Except for Google which awards Pagerank to websites, it’s the same principle for all search engines: more QUALITY incoming links means the site will rank better in the search results, which means MORE VISITORS if your website is among the first page (top ten) of search results.

THE TRICK IS WHERE OR HOW to build incoming links.

Before that, let me relate what’s happening right now.

It saddens me to learn that many people I know literally have their online livelihood wiped out overnight, as a result of the recent Google algorithm update.

These are the professional bloggers who get paid to blog for others. Google tracks these (some of the services leave behind footprints like “Sponsored Post”), and decided to penalize these blogs, by downgrading their blogs which are enjoying Pagerank 4, PR5 or even PR6, to a PR ZERO.

As a result, they cannot meet the requirements to blog for earnings, as their blogs no longer have Pagerank value.

This leads to what I said earlier: the incoming links must not be seen as manipulative. Other examples are reciprocal links, paid text links, link exchange networks etc. As long as there are footprints, the search engines will come after them.

HOW TO GET INCOMING LINKS

The traditional link building methods are:
* Article submission
* Posting blog comments
* Forum signatures
* Trackback posts (if you have a blog)

The newer ones are:
* Squidoo Lens
* Social bookmarking
* Yahoo Answers
* Video sharing sites

These are big topics on their own, so I’ll not discuss here. Don’t worry, just search for these terms in Google - there are lots of resources about them.

HOW TO MEASURE WEBSITE PERFORMANCE - FREE TOOLS

Once you have good contents and several incoming links, you should begin to see traffic from the search engines. The time taken for this to happen depends on several factors, notably the competitiveness of the niche.

I’ll now show you the free tools you can use to monitor how your website is PERFORMING, including the exact search terms that visitors are finding your website - you’ll BE SURPRISED what these terms are.

The tools show you the number of visitors, where they come from, and which search terms that they used to arrive at your website. Isn’t that exciting ?

For Wordpress blogs, I’d recommend WP-Slimstat-EX (don’t be confused with WP-Slimstat, which is a preceding version).

CAN A NEW WEBSITE GO FROM PR0 TO PR4 IN 5 WEEKS ?

It was easy to get high Pagerank 1-2 years back. Nowadays it is increasingly difficult to get good Pagerank as Google tightens its criteria in awarding Pagerank. A Pagerank 4 or 5 is considered good these days, compared to a PR 5-6 months ago.

Now there’s another interesting method of acquiring incoming links that I just came to know about.

These incoming links are from high traffic, high Pagerank sites, so you get traffic AND Pagerank benefits flowing to your website. (No, it’s not social bookmarking sites which have been heavily abused.)

With this method, it is proven that a new website can get from PR0 to PR4 in 5 weeks.

This is new to me, and I’m excited about it. Based on my years of experience in dabbling with SEO, I know this is a workable method, with NO RISK of being penalized.

The answer is YES. But you need to be very careful.

Before you start to dispute that, let me give you an analogy:

Let’s say you want to get from Point A to Point B, which is 50 miles away. You can certainly get there by walking, which is free.  

But you can get there faster by bicycle, by car or taxi, or by bus. These are “tools” which will cost you some money. But you get there faster.

Even if you walk there, you have a better chance of getting to Point B (if at all) if you have a map or a guide.

It’s the same with making money online. There are many ways to achieve it using free resources. However, with information overload, distractions and countless scams, it is a dangerous journey you are taking.

I know of a resource which shows you how to make money online using free resources. It’s like giving you a map, which guides you over a proven path.

Not only that, they provide one-on-one email support, which in my opinion is very crucial for any credible program if you need help along the way.

I’ve seen many make-money programs over the years, but the value I see in this site far outweighs the rest. I don’t know why they cram so many monthly membership benefits for a small one-time fees, but it’s certainly good news for you.

They also claim to produce “Quick Cash Formula” products regularly which they will sell independently, and members will get them for free. Just one of these products will cover the cost of the one-time joining fees.

I suspect they are now trying to build a sizeable membership base, before they convert it to a monthly fees model. I may be wrong, but I can’t think of a better reason why they are literally giving the house away for a song.

You need to see it to believe it.

• the 3 defense : antivirus, spyware, firewall - all using free software 
• disabling unnecessary Windows services, which helps to speed up boot-up time
• freeware to do caching, defrag, registry cleaning and optimizing
• more tips to reduce boot up time
• tweaks to reduce Internet connection and download time
• short checklist on weekly maintenance

After doing the above, I found my PC to be more stable, boot up faster (almost half the time), and runs faster overall.

Now that my PC is fast and stable again, I can get more work done with the limited time I have. Talk about increased productivity!

I’ve been lucky. I did not fall for many of the “scams” or questionable schemes out there, claiming to make you a millionaire in a short time.

There are numerous ways to make money on the Internet, but those that are SUSTAINABLE AND REWARDING usually takes quite a fair bit of time and effort. Affiliate marketing is one of the more appealing ways.

WHY AFFILIATE MARKETING?  

For someone new, affiliate marketing offers the easiest way to start. You don’t need your own product, you don’t need a website (although it’s good to have one), you don’t have to worry about customer support, you don’t need to set up payment channels etc.

But why are some people wildly successful at it, while the vast majority just become casualties?

They make costly mistakes - just like I did when I started out. I’m listing down 7 mistakes that I once was a victim, in the hope that you will not repeat them.

7 MISTAKES IN AFFILIATE MARKETING THAT YOU MUST AVOID

 1.  Thinking that affiliate marketing (or Internet marketing in general) is a piece of cake. The truth is that it takes time, effort and a little money to see substantial results. 

2.  Not doing the RIGHT kind of research before deciding on a market.

3.  Taking too much time analyzing or “learning” and not taking CONSISTENT action.

4.  Spending too much time or money on the WRONG kind of promotion.

5.  Not tracking or monitoring the results of the promotion techniques, resulting in wasted effort and cost overuns.

6.  Moving from one project to another in quick succession without giving it a chance to see results.

7.  Giving up too quickly, and concluding that everything online is a SCAM (especially if you get the wrong kind of advice).

The above seems much like common sense, but they are real reasons why so many aspiring marketers fail to even make a dollar online despite spending thousands of dollars.  

The truth is, most people do not know where to start looking for good advice.

BUT WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO LEARN ALL THESE AFFILIATE MARKETING STUFF?

I’ve been repeatedly asked by my subscribers to mentor them or to come up with a coaching program which they are willing to pay for. I always point them to somewhere else, as coaching is not what I would like to do anytime soon.

In terms of user friendliness, I somewhat find Wealthy Affiliate to be a little ahead. The general feeling I have is that Wealthy Affiliate provides more value for money, and a lot of thought have been put in designing the site so that even a COMPLETE BEGINNER can quickly put what he learns into action. 

Another plus point is the offer of free hosting by Wealthy Affiliate, which can save you anything from $9.95 per month for outside hosting. If you do not have a host yet, this is money that you should save.

They even provide you with keyword lists on 40+ markets, with recommended products that you can start promoting.

In any program, support is of utmost importance: Wealthy Affiliate offers 1-on-1 support, in addition to a hyperactive forum. They will review your websites, help you with setting up campaigns, provide specific advice and fine-tune your Adwords account. Talk about hand-holding you to success!

And the cost to join Wealthy Affiliate is small compared to what a typical “guru” coaching program would cost you, which sometimes runs into the tens of thousands of dollars with no guarantee of
results. And if you put your heart to it, you can get back many times your investment with relative ease.
