Easy Organic Traffic Series 2 – On-Page SEO

It is true that getting more links to your website is more important than on-page SEO factors, however, that doesn’t mean that on-page SEO is not important. In fact, on-page SEO should be done before link building.

Not only is it simpler than you think, you just have to set it up nicely once & there’s not much to do after that…..

Domain Name

Your main keyword should be in the domain name. Let’s say you are selling used baby strollers then your domain might be www.usedbabystrollers.com, if possible use only .com, .org, .net domains, no digits or hyphens if possible.

Keyword-Rich Tags

There are a few important tags & they are none other than….. title tags, H1 tags, meta tags. All these tags should contain your main keywords in them. Same for your meta description

Permalink Structure

This is how your link looks like, rather than having www.yoursite.com/p?=123, it is better to have something like www.yoursite.com/some-topic. Not only will it help with your SEO, it makes your site more user-friendly.

Natural Keyword Density

Now that you got your keywords in all the right places, sprinkle your keywords over your content. I mean add them in naturally rather than stuffing them all over the place.

Sitemap & XML Sitemap

Having a sitemap helps your site get spidered by search engines easily. You should have both a normal sitemap & an XML sitemap. If you’re using WordPress, you can create them easily with free plugins.

Categories & Keyword Tags

This is specifically for WordPress….. put your main keywords & secondary keywords in your categories. Also there’s this thing known as keyword tags, I’m exactly sure how to explain it, all I know is using them did help me to rank better on search engines.

Conclusion

Like I said, on-page SEO is way simpler than you think, now you know why…..

Sometimes it seems that the easiest and cheapest methods are those most overlooked. I agree that there are too many solutions for something that does not have to be that difficult. Thanks for reinforcing the basics.

I find this information to be right on.  Build your site right before you build your links.

Leonard Sappleton Says:

Hi Craig, thanks for the tips. You know I am totally new to internet marketing and I have no tech knowledge, but I am determined to make some money online. Until I read some of your blog posts I had  no idea about SEO. I have no HTML knowledge. What I have found is that there is little, if anything around that gives you real “start from scratch stuff without the Hi-tech. The website above I host on freeservers and I am trying to sell affiliate products through clickbank. This is after years of trying things on my own. I still work 9-5 Need some real BASIC HELP BADLY!

Doug Allitt Says:

Thanks Craig,
Great article. It makes a nice simple and concise checklist. Hope you don’t mind – I’ve printed it out for my use.
So many people make SEO seem like a horrifying monster – you just made it doable.
Cheers,
Doug.

Dean Says:

Great basic check sheet.

Like you say spending the time to do some basic SEO when you set up the site is easy brownie points for the search engines. And every little bit helps when trying to impress the great Google!

Craig Johnson Says:

Tim,

Yes, it’s true, basic stuff still work best!

Peter,

I’m glad you like my article.

Saundra,

Site building comes first then link building, that’s right!

Leonard,

No worries about lack og knowledge, you can pick them up easily, bit by bit over time.

Doug,

Wow, you printed this article! Good job!

Dean,

Not only you need to ‘impress’ Google, you need to offer value to your visitors.

Paul Says:

Hi Craig,

I’d like you clarify the issue of the domain name. You’ve mentioned we shouldn’t use hyphens. Previously, SEO  literature generally stated that hyphens were necessary for the search engines to decipher keywords correctly. Has this changed? Are the SEO algorithms more capable now?

Thanks.
Paul

Craig Johnson Says:

Paul,

Algorithms are always changing, nothing we can do about that. The only thing we can do is to keep our site relevant & keep providing good value & good content.

Rika Susan Says:

Thanks, Craig. Just goes to show that it isn’t that difficult as long as you stick to the basics.  Don’t need fancy footwork to make progress.

Craig Johnson Says:

That’s right! Nothing fancy needed, just the good old basics will do!

pvidia Says:

Hi Craig, i have used your advice for my new website and the result was amazing.  Domain name is the number one keyword to get high ranking in search engine.

Jim Says:

I just got a chance to read your second article and again job well done. I have been looking for this and had some problems with broken links to get here, but with determination I found it.

By the way, I love reading your articles. As a newbie or beginner to all this SEO stuff, could you explain the following:

Keyword-Rich Tags

There are a few important tags & they are none other than… title tags, H1 tags, meta tags. All these tags should contain your main keywords in them. Same for your meta description, what are title tags, H1 tags, meta tags?

I know what they are but your readers might not. Other than that great article. Looking forward to the next one. Keep me informed.

Violeta Esplana Says:

Ops!  certainly SEO has changed I was made to understand that having a hyphens is more effective. Thanks for the update.

It would be nice if you can give example when you mentioned about = natural keyword density, sitemap and xml sitemap categories and keyword tags. It is more clear. Maybe I am the only one?

Anyway, thanks for the info.

Craig Johnson Says:

Pvidia,

Wow, great to hear that! You owe it to yourself for taking action so fast! Well done!

Jim,

If i go on to explain the technical side of tags, you would all be bored to tears, haha. Quick tip: use wordpress with seo plugin & sitemap plugin.

H1 tag should be added when you are writing a post or page.

Violeta,

That’s a good idea. How about I cover all that in my future blog posts? If the response is good, I might do a mini series on wordpress for SEO.

Craig Johnson Says:

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the comments & nice words, I truly feel appreciated by you & this alone really gives me the strength to keep me going.

If I were to do a mini series on SEO with wordpress, would you be interested? As usual, it would be simple & easy to apply.

Samuel Says:

Go ahead! I’m sure I can learn something useful from you. SEO with wordpress is a great idea, also it is easy to do.

dex Says:

I wish I had known the information in your post earlier. It would have saved me a lot of work and brought me more traffic. And, yes, I would love to know the essentials of formatting and using wordpress blogs. Right now I only create regular websites.

Guy Says:

Hi Craig,
What’s the use of keywords in the categories, if the permalink structure is %post_name% and not %category_name%/%post_name% ??
Wouldn’t it be wise to make the categories “no index” so to not get duplicate content internally?
(I could see the use of categories for users, not for SEO)
Thanks,
Guy

Lyle Kannenberg Says:

Great tips! Lots of plugins are available to automate your SEO process in Wordpress.  Once you have the base setup with the plugins, all you have to do next is make sure your content matches your categories, and tags.

Craig Johnson Says:

Categories with keywords could help at times, however, I’m not 100% sure about it so I do use categories in my permalinks.

As long content, categories, tags, keywords, they match, then seo shouldn’t be a problem.

Annie Cook Says:

Hi there is all in one SEO plugin for wordpress & for anyone who wants plug and play type of tool. I have been generating organic traffic to my blog which is not in the make money online niche.

It was very difficult to build this niche but SEO programmes help a lot. SEO to me is still all around the best way to get traffic automatically and it doesn’t take too much effort to set up.

The only part you may have to work on is what type of keywords and niche you want to speak on. Don’t be fooled though, make sure you also have great content to keep people returning to your website.

I have made one site without much more experience. Would you suggest me about its Title, Keywords density and keyword tags ? My main keyword is adsense just for your information.

Craig Johnson Says:

Just put your keywords in those places that I mentioned.

Geoff Slingsby Says:

Hi there…
There is a lot of truth in using your keywords in the URL. “Domain Name”.
I have just launched a very basic site, which I will build “over time” (as you say Craig). As soon as the little google bots indexed it the site was on page one.
Now the keyword phrase is 4 words long and would not be searched as such. However there are many search terms that fit on an LSI or thematic basis, (similar terms, phrases), which I can build pages around.
I do enjoy your content Craig and although I’ve nuked many of the marketers from my in box, you are still welcome and your blog feeds into my Google reader.
Cheers and thanks
Geoff Slingsby
